Dr. Marta Barbato (postdoc). Marta's research in the Engineered Microbial Systems lab at Aarhus University focuses on marine bacterial communities involved in hydrocarbon degradation at increased hydrostatic pressure (HP). She investigates the activity of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria in natural environments, enrichment cultures and isolated strains with both classical microbiological techniques (isolation, growth and activity tests on the isolated strains) and molecular techniques (genome, metagenome and transcriptome analyses)
Mr. Antonio Caivano is a Master student originally from the University of Bologna (Italy). His work focuses on the impact of nutrients on the bioremediation capacity of cold, natural seawater communities exposed to increased hydrostatic pressure (HP), using a microbiological and physiological approach.
Visiting scientists
Dr. Grégoire Michoud (postdoc) visited the EMS lab in January 2020 from the group of Prof. Daniele Daffonchio (KAUST, Saudi Arabia). His work at the EMS lab focused on the microbial response to temperature-pressure combinations in the obligate hydrocarbon-degrading bacterium Alcanivorax borkumensis.
Ms. Nathalia Delgadillo Ordonez (Master student) visited the EMS lab between October and November 2019. Nathalia was originally from the group of Prof. Daniele Daffonchio (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) and visited the EMS lab to work on the growth profile under increased hydrostatic pressure of a novel hydrocarbon-degrading isolate originating from the Red Sea.
Ms. Valérie Mattelin (Master student) visited the EMS lab from August 2018 to January 2019. Valérie was originally from the laboratory of Prof. Nico Boon, Gent University (Belgium) and worked at the EMS lab on the isolation of hydrocarbon degraders from enrichments cultivated under increased hydrostatic pressure.
Mr. Bernat Mazó Oliver (intern) visited the EMS lab from July to October 2019. Bernat was originally from the University of Girona, and worked at the EMS lab on hydrocarbon-degrading synthetic communities under ambient and increased hydrostatic pressure
Ms. Anna Pico Tomas (intern) visited the EMS lab from July to September 2019. Anna was originally from the University of Girona, and worked at the EMS lab on the physiology and biotechnology of polyextremophiles applied to calcium carbonate precipitation
