Microbial Biointerfaces in Water Engineering

In the Microbial Biointerfaces group, we aim to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges through an understanding of biofilm composition and formation.

We are particularly interested in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that bind the biofilms.

One major focus area is developing technologies that enable the recovery and valorization of EPS from microbial biomasses derived from waste treatments, which are one of society’s largest biosolid waste streams.

We thus hope to help build a new circular economy in water management. We also aim to elucidate new strategies to control biofilm growth, specifically those targeting EPS production, composition and structure.

Both focus areas require innovative approaches for downstream processing, and chemical and biophysical analyses.
